Fotografi da Rally : Intervista a Honza Fronêk

Questa è la prima intervista della serie “Fotografi da Rally” che ha lo scopo di raccogliere delle testimonianze dei grandi fotografi che riescono sempre a sbalordirci con i loro fantastici scatti.
Oggi ho il piacere di farvi conoscere Honza Fronêk un fotografo della repubblica ceca che scatta attualmente per RallyMania.CZ di cui è anche l’editore; come capirete in seguito Honza non è un fotografo “full time” ma di professione è un esperto tecnico meccanico.

When you start to shoot? Why?
Quando hai iniziato a scattare??Perchè??

“I begun in 2003/2004 when digital photography was rising. I visited rallies from my 2 years with my father who always took photos but he stopped because he preferes analog photography. I like digital photography so I did my first photos with compact camera.”

 

“In Belgio nel 2003/2004 quando la fotografia digitale era in aumento. Ho visto rally da quando avevo 2 anni con mio padre il quale ha sempre fotografato ma lui ha smesso perchè preferiva la fotografia analogica. Mi piace la fotografia digitale quindi ho fatto le mie prime foto con una macchina digitale compatta.”

 

Who has teach you how to do good images?
Chi ti ha insegnato come fare belle foto?

“I was analysing photos with my father but we have dufferent point of view to photos. He taught me basis of photograhy but I was improving myself with looking to all rally galleries over the internet.”

 

“Analizzavo le foto con mio padre ma avevamo punti di vista differenti sulle foto.Lui mi ha insegnato le basi della fotografia ma mi sono migliorato osservando le gallerie fotografiche di rally in internet.”

When you have realized that could become your future job?
Quand’è che hai realizzato che sarebbe potuto diventare il tuo lavoro futuro?

“Photography is not my job, it earns some money but it isnt my full time job. I am still realizing that I dont want this as my full time job. It is good hobby especialy for me because I like traveling. It is nice when I earn some money with taking photos on WRC but it is more like part time job.”

 

“La fotografia non è il mio lavoro, posso realizzarci qualche soldo ma non è il mio lavoro a tempo pieno. Mi stò rendendo conto che non voglio che questo diventi il mio lavoro a tempo peno. Indubbiamente è un buon Hobby specialmente per me perchè mi piace viaggiare. E’ bello quando riesco a guadagnarci qualcosa facendo foto nel WRC ma è comunque più simile a un lavoro part time.”

Parlami della tua carriera

“As I wrote I visited rally from my early childhood so I was always connected with rally but only in Czech rep and surrounding countries. I started shooting in 2003/2004 with compact camera and my father bought first digital SLR in 2005. In same year I won travel to my first WRC event to Germany with fans of Stepan Vojtech who started with Peugeot 307 WRC. I met there guy who was working on Rally-Mania.cz and he offered me cooperation.It was quite new website. So it begun to make sense visit more and more rallies and present my photos on this website. In 2009 I visited 5 WRC events and became editor-in-chief of Rally-Mania. My friends got new jobs and settled down with families so they didnt have time to work on this page. In 2010 I visited 10 WRC events and switched to WRC completely. I wasnt on rally in Czech more than 3 years. I started to sell my photos and earn money to pay those travels. I earn some more money that I need to pay flights, carrentals etc but it still not enough to have photography like full time job. It was easy doing that during my studies at university. I missed one of my last exams because of rally in Greece but I had second chance between Germany and France so it was better. I am working like technical expert of medicine devices in Czech and I am lucky that I can combine this work with photography.”

 

“Come ho precedentemete scritto ho frequantato i rally già dalla tenera età ma solo nella Repubblica Ceca e stati confinanti. Ho iniziato a scattare 2003/2004 con una compatta e mio padre mi ha comprato la mia prima SLR digitale nel 2005. Nello stesso anno ho fatto il mio primo viaggio per vedere un evento Wrc in Germania con i tifosi di Stepan Vojtech  il quale era in gara con la Peugeot 307 Wrc.Là ho conosciuto un ragazzo che lavorava per Rally-Mania.cz e mi ha offerto una collaborazione. Al tempo era un sito abbastanza nuovo.Così ha cominciato ad avere maggior senso vedere via via sempre più rally e pubblicare le mie foto in questo sito web.Nel 2009 ho visto 5 eventi del Wrc e sono diventato editore di Rally-Mania.I miei amici hanno ottenuto un nuovo lavoro e si sono dovuti trasferire con le famiglie non avendo più tempo da decicare al sito.Nel 2010 ho visto 10 eventi Wrc e sono passato a seguire il Wrc completamente.Da più di 3 anni non vado più ad un rally ceco.Ho iniziato a vendere le mie foto guadagnando quanlcosa per pagarmi i viaggi. E’ stato facile fare ciò mentre studiavo all’università. Ho perso il mio ultimo esame per colpa del rally di Grecia ma ho avuto una seconda possibilità tra il Germania e l’evento in Francia quindi è stato meglio così.Lavoro come esperto tecnico di macchinari in Repubblica Ceca e sono fortunato che posso combinare questo lavoro con la fotografia.”

 

What’s your target when you are shooting? What do you want transmit in you photos?
Qual’è il tuo scopo quando scatti?Cosa vuoi trasmettere nelle tue foto?

“My target is to have happy customers, I am trying to bring piece of land where is the rally together with car to fans on internet and magazine readers. I prefere landscape photos with small car and ofcourse action photos are always good.”

 

“Il mio scopo è rendere soddisfatti i miei acquirenti, cerco di unire i paesaggi dove si svolgono i rally assieme alle macchine e ai tifosi per foto destinate a internet e per giornali. Preferisco le foto di paesaggi con le macchine in gara piccole e ovviamente le foto d’azione sono sempre belle.”

 

You are too young is this an advantage in your business?
Sei molto giovane, è questo un vantaggio nel tuo mestiere?

“It could be andvantage and disadvantage too. I am young so I still have enough energy and I always discovered something new. But if you are lot of years in bussines you know all the members of teams, drivers and codrivers so it could be easy to arrange more jobs. But it could be stereotyp for somebody who is there many years.”

 

“Potrebbe essere un vantaggio ma anche uno svantaggio.Sono giovane quindi continuo ad avere molta energia e riesco sempre a scoprire qualcosa di nuovo.Ma se sei già da molti anni in questo bussines conoscerai tutti i membri del team,piloti e copiloti quindi potrebbe essere più facile avere maggior lavoro.Ma potrebbe essere uno stereotipo da chi c’è già da molto tempo.”

 

Do you prefer static or panning photos?Why?
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning?Perchè?

“It depends on the place where are you shooting. Panning could help you when there is ugly background behind and panning photos looks more action for sure.”

 

” Dipende dal posto dove stai scattando.Il panningo potrebbe aiutarti quando non c’è uno sfonfo accattivante e le foto di questo genere rendono meglio l’idea del movimento sicuramente.”

Who is your best rally photographer ever?
Qual’è per te il miglior fotografo di rally di sempre?

“I like Petr Lusk´s photos”

What’s your equipment?
Qual’è il tuo equipaggiamento?

“I am using Nikon cameras from the beginig. I need profesional cameras and lenses only. I have 2 bodies and 4 lenses. It is more than 12kg of equipment without laptop.
I have Nikon D300 and Nikon D3S, Nikkor 12-24/f4, Nikkor 24-70/f2,8, Nikkor 70-200/2,8 and Samyang 14/2,8.“

 

“Continuo ad usare reflex Nikon sin dall’esordio. Necessito di fotocamere e lenti professionali . Possiedo 2 corpi e 4 lenti. Il tutto pesa più di 12 kg e senza portatile.
Possiedo : Nikon D300 and Nikon D3S, Nikkor 12-24/f4, Nikkor 24-70/f2,8, Nikkor 70-200/2,8 and Samyang 14/2,8.“

 

What do you think about post production in the rally photos?
Cosa pensi della post-produzione nelle foto di rally?

“I am using only basic corections in PC but more sofisticated post procesing is rising now so I am trying to do it in few photos per rally too.But I am prefereng basic corections, it is more similar to analog photography.”

 

“Uso solo correzioni base con il PC ma solo recentemente stò migliorando e cerco di effettuare una  maggior soddisfacente  post-produzione  in alcuni scatti per rally.”

 

What is you favourite rally in the world and why?
Qual’è il tuo rally preferito nel mondo e perchè?

“I like WRC in Norway, there are better road than in Sweden and much more snow. Sardinia and Greece are very nice too because of nice landscape.”

 

“Mi piace il Wrc in Norvegia, ci sono migliori strade rispetto la Svezia e molta più neve. Sardegna e Grecia sono anchesse molto belle in particolare per i paesaggi”

Which is the more sociable rally driver?
Chi è il pilota più socievole?

“Drivers from north Europe are very friendly like Finnishs, Norwegian…”

 

“I piloti del nord europa sono molto amichevoli come i finnici e norvegesi..”

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action?
Qual’è il pilota migliore da immortalare nell’azione?

“Petter Solberg for sure. And Jari-Matti too. I remember Gigi Galli too,he was always flatout and jumped on places where nobody lifted any wheel.”

 

“Petter Solberg di sicuro a anche Jari-Matti. Mi ricordo di Gigi Galli anche , andava sempre a tutta e saltava in posti dove nessun’altro alza neanche una ruota.”

What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not?
Cosa pensi del Wrc e dell’Erc sono meglio oggi o no?

“I came to business after big boom of WRC in late 90th´s and early 20th´s.I believe that was better to have 20-30 WRCs per rally and 5 marks than 12 WRCs. Lets see what happened in future. Situation always could be worst. ERC adopted good vision of IRC but it would be nice to see more cars there.”

 

“Sono arrivato nel giro dopo il boom del Wrc alla fine degli anni ’90 e i primi anni 2000.  Credo che era meglio avere  20-30 Wrc per rally e 5 produttori rispetto a 12 Wrc. Vedremo cosa accadrà in futuro. La situazione potrebbe sempre essere peggiore. Erc ha adottato l’ottima visibilità dell’IRC ma sarebbe bello vedere un numero maggiore di macchine in questo campionato.”

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans?
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi?

“It will be my 4th Rally Sardinia this year and I realy enjoy this event with fans and nice stages. I have never been on different event in Italy.But my friends visited Sanremo, Tuscan Rewind and Legends and always enjoy those rallies.”

 

“Sarà il mio 4° Rally di Sardegna quest’anno e mi diverto molto in questo evento con i tifosi e le belle prove. Non sono mai stato in altri eventi in Italia ma i miei amici hanno visitato Sanremo , Tuscan Rewind  ed il Legend e si sono sempre divertiti a questi rally.”
