Paddon si racconta a Rally.it: “Emozionato per Sanremo. WRC? I risultati arriveranno”

Nonostante la Nuova Zelanda sia esattamente (o quasi) dall’altra parte del mondo rispetto a noi, Hayden Paddon pare amare davvero il nostro paese, il “kiwi” infatti non perde occasione di venirci a trovare di tanto in tanto, tra Rally Legend vari e, a breve, partecipando al Rally di Sanremo.
Noi di Rally.it abbiamo deciso di contattarlo e parlare con lui di Sanremo, del nuovo navigatore, del mondiale e non solo. Ecco cosa ci siamo detti.

Ciao Hayden, questo fine settimana parteciperai al Rally Sanremo. E’ un evento pieno di storia, come ti senti ad affrontarlo? E cosa ti aspetti dagli avversari che incontrerai?
Sì sono molto carico, il rally ha un sacco di storia e sarà bello competere lì per la prima volta. Non ci concentreremo sul risultato, l’obiettivo è guadagnare esperienza sull’asfalto. Sappiamo che il campionato italiano è molto competitivo e ci saranno un sacco di piloti veloci.

Ultimamente sei stato al centro dell’attenzione perché cambierai navigatore dopo il Rally di Finlandia. Cosa ti mancherà di John Kennard e quali novità ci saranno con Seb Marshall?
Sì, è una decisione importante ma una che abbiamo discusso negli ultimi due anni. Io e John abbiamo passato 12 bellissimi anni insieme ma abbiamo sempre saputo che ad un certo punto ci sarebbe stato un cambiamento. Abbiamo lavorato con Seb [Marshall ndr] negli ultimi 12 mesi nei vari test e nel team, quindi abbiamo pensato che ora è il momento giusto per il cambio, in preparazione al 2018.

Sei conosciuto per essere un gran lavoratore, che prova sempre a migliore la propria guida, e la vittoria in Argentina è uno dei più grandi risultati del tuo lavoro.
Quali sono, al moemento, gli aspetti sui quali stai lavorando maggiormente per fare un altro passo avanti?
E’ la cosa bella del rally – tutti i piloti e le auto diventando sempre più veloci, e quando credi di aver fatto un passo avanti – lo stesso hanno fatto tutti gli altri. La competizione è così serrata ora, che i margini sui quali lavoriamo sono molto piccoli, e a volte questo significa che devi pensare fuori dagli schemi.
Quello di quest’anno non è stato il nostro miglior inizio, ma dietro le quinte stiamo facendo ottimi progressi e sono sicuro che presto, si trasformeranno in risultati.

La Hyundai i20 WRC ha mostrato un grande passo dall’inizio del campionato ma non ha ancora vinto un rally.
Come ti senti nell’auto? Ci sono delle aree da migliorare? 
Tutte le auto e i team sembrano vicini quest’anno, il che è ottimo – naturalmente anche io penso di avere una buona macchina. Stiamo ancora ricercando il setup più adatto al mio stile di guida, stiamo lavorando sodo per migliorare questo aspetto.

Quest’anno sembra che ci sia un po’ più equilibrio tra i piloti davanti. Chi credi sarà il più difficile da battere e in generale quali sono i tuoi obiettivi per la fine della stagione?
Credo che ogni team abbia dei piloti capaci di vincere dei rally. Ho sempre detto che i 3 avversari principali sarebbero stati Seb [Ogier], Kris [Meeke] e Thierry [Neuville] ma abbiamo visto quest’anno che anche Ott [Tanak] e Jari [Latvala] sono molto competitivi. Il livello di tutti i piloti è molto bilanciato e non puoi escludere nessuno.

Hello Hayden, you will be participating at Rallye Sanremo, it is an event full of history, how do you feel about it and what do you expect from your new opponents?
Yes very excited, the rally has a lot of history and will be great to compete there for the first time. For us the event is not about the result – it’s about getting more time on Tarmac. We know the Italian championship is very competitive and there will be a lot of fast drivers.

You’ve been at the center of the attention lately because you’re going to change your co-driver after rally Finland: what will you miss of John Kennard and what new you will get from Seb Marshall?
Yes it’s a big decision but one we have been discussing for the past 2 years. John and I have enjoyed a great 12 years together but we always knew a change had to happen at some point. We have been working with Seb [Marshall] for the past 12 months with testing and in the team – so we thought now was a good time for the change in preparation for 2018.

You are known to be a hard worker, always trying to improve your driving skills and the victory in Argentina is one of the main outcomes of that job.
What are, now, the axpects you are working on and what do you think you need to improve in order to make a further step forward?
That’s the great thing about rallying – all the drivers and cars are getting faster all the time, and when you think you have made a step forward – so has everyone else. The competition is so close now that the margins we are looking for are so small and sometimes that means we have to think outside the box. This year hasn’t been the best start to the year, but behind the scenes we are making good progress and I’m sure that soon, that will translate to results.

The Hyundai i20 WRC has showed great pace since the very beginning of the championship but has not yet win an event.
How do you feel in the car? Are there some area to improve?
All the cars and teams seem close this year which is great – but ofcourse I think we have a good car too. But we are still working to get the best setup for my driving style and we are working hard to improve this.

It seems there is a bit more balance this year among the top drivers. Who do you think will be the hardest to beat and what are your goals for the end of the season?
I think each team all has drivers capable of winning rally’s. I have always said that the 3 main opponents will be Seb [Ogier], Kris [Meeke] and Thierry [Neuville], but we have also seen this year that Ott [Tanak] and Jari [Latvala] are also very competitive. But the level of all drivers is so close that you can’t rule anyone out.
