Fotografi da Rally – Intervista a Romain Thuillier

Per la 9° uscita della serie “fotografi da rally ” abbiamo l’onore di presentarvi due giovani fratelli gemelli francesi Vincent e Romain Thuillier .

Di seguito è riportata l’intervista di Romain mentre quella di Vincent è QUI.

When you start to shoot ?? Why ??
Quando hai iniziato a scattare ?? Perchè ??

“I actually started to take rally pictures from 2004, during my first WRC rally in Germany. I had the small Panasonic compact camera of my parents and all pictures were completely messed up, but the goal was only to bring souvenirs home, like lots of spectators do. And it was the same the following couples of years because rally Germany was the closest WRC event from my home town. I kept the old Panasonic compact camera because as a student, I could not really afford a better camera. In 2009, I bought a bridge camera and I learned by myself the basics of photography, how to shoot manually, how to set up the camera, composition, etc. Of course, in the meantime, rallying has remained a passion for me. In 2010, when I got my first job as a mechanical engineer in North of France, I bought my first reflex camera (a Nikon D90) and started to visit national rallies in Belgium. From this moment, as time and budget are no major problems anymore (well, to a certain extent!) I try to visit as much rallies in Belgium, France or Europe as possible.
In December 2011, my brother Vincent and I created “Eyes of Rally” in order to share our passion of rallying. It seems that it has still quite a lot of success, so I’m happy with that. In June 2012, we joined a small team in order to create a free e-magazine called “Inside Motorsport”. This is for us a new way to share pictures. The team is really great and we enjoy a lot!”

“Ho iniziato a scattare foto di rally a partire dal 2004 , durante il mio primo rally WRC in Germania . Avevo la piccola fotocamera compatta Panasonic dei miei genitori e tutte le immagini sono state completamente sbagliate , ma l’obiettivo era solo portare a casa souvenir , come un sacco di spettatori fanno. Fu lo stesso per un paio di anni perché Rally di Germania era l’evento WRC più vicino alla mia città . Ho tenuto la vecchia fotocamera compatta Panasonic perché come studente , non ho potevo davvero permettersi una fotocamera migliore . Nel 2009, ho comprato una fotocamera bridge e ho imparato da solo le basi della fotografia , come scattare manualmente , come impostare la macchina fotografica , la composizione, ecc.. Naturalmente , nel frattempo , il rally è rimasta una passione per me . Nel 2010, quando ho ottenuto il mio primo lavoro come ingegnere meccanico nel Nord della Francia , ho comprato la mia prima reflex ( una Nikon D90 ) e ho iniziato a visitare i rally nazionali in Belgio . Da questo momento , il tempo ed il budget non sono sati più grossi problemi ( beh, fino ad un certo punto ! ) Ho cercato di visitare il più manifestazioni possibili in Belgio, in Francia o in Europa.
A dicembre 2011 , mio fratello Vincent edi io abbiamo creato “Eyes of Rally” al fine di condividere la nostra passione dei rally . Sembra abbia avuto un bel po ‘ di successo , quindi sono felice di questo . Nel giugno 2012, abbiamo aderito a un piccolo team al fine di creare un e -magazine chiamato “Inside Motorsport ” . Questo è per noi un nuovo modo di condividere le immagini . Il team è davvero grande e ci piace un sacco! “

Who has teach you how to do good images ??
Chi ti ha insegnato a realizzare buone immagini ??

“As I said, I learned by myself the basics, reading articles on the internet and also by doing a lot of mistakes, which is always the best training method. Looking at picture of other professional or amateur photographers is also good for inspiration. The purpose is not to copy the shots, but to understand what the photographer wanted to tell you though his/her pictures, which story is behind the picture. It helps you then to look at what other people usually don’t.”

“Come ho detto, ho imparato da solo le nozioni di base, tramite lettura di articoli su internet e anche facendo un sacco di errori, che è sempre il miglior metodo di allenamento. Guardando foto di altri fotografi professionisti o amatoriali che è anche un buono strumento per l’ispirazione. L’scopo non è quello di copiare i gli scatti, ma capire ciò che il fotografo ha voluto dire tramite le sue foto, che storia c’è dietro l’immagine. Ti aiuta poi a guardare diversamente dalle altre persone. “

Do you think that could be your future job ??
Pensi che potrebbe diventare il tuo lavoro futuro ??

“Most of professional photographers will tell you that the business is quite difficult these days.
At the moment I have a job which allows me to make a comfortable living and therefore visit several WRC events during the year, so there is no need for me to make money in that business. But we never know, for sure it would be great!”

“La maggior parte dei fotografi professionisti ti diranno che il loro lavoro è abbastanza difficile di questi tempi.
Al momento ho un lavoro che mi permette di fare una vita comoda e quindi visitare diversi eventi WRC durante l’anno, quindi non c’è alcun bisogno per me di fare soldi in questo business. Ma non si sa mai, di sicuro sarebbe fantastico! “

What’s the different in the images between you and your brother Vincent ??
Quali sono le differenze nelle immagini tra te e tuo fratello Vincent ??

“This is actually a question that people always ask since we are twin’s brothers. I would say that we have both the same aims which are the same as every photographer I guess, for instance trying to catch the perfect action moment, or to catch the atmosphere, emotions… But every photographer has its own personality and therefore its own view. There is also a big part of the work that we share together which is preparation before the rally (looking at the maps, finding good locations on the stages, preparing the best itinerary as possible, etc.). This is a team effort!”

“Questo è in realtà una domanda che la gente chiede sempre perché siamo fratelli di gemelli. Direi che abbiamo entrambi gli stessi obiettivi che sono gli stessi di ogni fotografo credo, per esempio cercareo di catturare il momento perfetto d’ azione, o per catturare l’atmosfera, o emozioni … Ma ogni fotografo ha la sua personalità, e quindi il proprio punto di vista. C’è anche una grande parte del lavoro che condividiamo insieme, che è la preparazione prima del rally (guardando le mappe, trovando buone posizioni sui prove, la preparazione del miglior itinerario possibile, ecc.) Questo è un lavoro di squadra! “

What’s your target when you are shooting ?? What do you want transmit in you photos ??
Qual’ èil tuo obiettivo quando scatti ?? Cosa vuoi tramettere nelle foto ??

“I think the most important is showing to people things that are not usually pictured. It could be for instance different view, different angle of a well know corner, drivers not smiling, etc. Rallying is such an amazing sport, there are so many stuffs to picture.”

“Penso che la cosa più importante è mostrare alle persone le cose che di solito non sono raffigurate. Potrebbe essere per esempio un punto di vista diverso, una divesa visione di una curva famosa, piloti non sorridenti, ecc .Il rally è uno sport incredibile, ci sono così tante parti da fotografare “.

Do you prefer static or panning photos ?? Why??
Preferisci foto statiche o in panning ?? Perchè ??

“I have no preference. Panning is always a bit risky, but it generally depends on the configuration of the road.”

” Non ho preferenza. Il panning è sempre più rischioso, ma generalmente dipende dalla conformazione della strada .”

Who is your best rally photographer ever ??
Chi è per te il miglior fotografo di sempre ??

“There are so many great photographers out there. I will not name all of them because it would be too long. The only exception that I can do is François Flamand, he is just amazing! It looks like French photographers are pretty good! People should also have a look at the pictures of the photographers of Inside Motorsport magazine, lots of talent there as well!”

“Ci sono così tanti grandi fotografi là fuori. Io non nomino tutti loro perché sarebbe troppo lungo. L’unica eccezione che posso fare è François Flamand, lui è semplicemente fantastico! Sembra che i fotografi francesi sono piuttosto bravi! Le persone dovrebbe dare anche uno sguardo alle immagini dei fotografi della rivista Inside Motorsport, ci sono un sacco di talenti! “

What’s your equipment ??
Qual’è il tuo equipaggiamento ??

“I have a Nikon D300s with a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VRII. I also have a Nikon D700 which I use with a Nikkor 24-120mm f4, a Nikkor 16mm f1.8 or a Nikkor 50mm f1.8.”

What do you think about post production in the rally photos ??
Cosa pensi della post produzione nelle foto di rally ??

“I think post production is very important. It’s not about cheating; it just shows how much care you put into your picture.”

“Penso che la post produzione sia molto importante. Non è barare ; ma dimostra quanta cura metti nelle tue immagini . “

You are too young, is this an advantage to find a place as Ph in Wrc or not??
Sei molto giovane, questo è un vantaggio nel trovare posto come fotografo nel Wrc o no??

“I cannot say I have a place as a photographer in wrc, so I cannot really say.”

“Non posso dire di avere posto come fotografo nel wrc , quindi non so cosa dire “

What is your favorite rally in the world and why??
Qual’è il tuo rally preferito al mondo e perchè??

“Among those I already visited, Greece is definitely the best, no doubt about that!”

“Tra quelli che ho già visitato, la Grecia è sicuramente la migliore, non c’è dubbio!”

Which is the more sociable rally driver??
Chi è il pilota più socievole??

“As I live quite close to Belgium (I even have lived there for one year), being able to see the progress of Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul is nice. They have very good spirit and they are nice and fresh characters for WRC. And my favorite driver is Marcus Gronhölm, even if I never met him, he is a so charismatic driver I think!”

“Siccome vivo abbastanza vicino al Belgio (ho anche vissuto per un anno), essendo in grado di vedere i progressi di Thierry Neuville e Nicolas Gilsoul è bello. Hanno un ottimo spirito e sono personaggi piacevoli e genuini per il WRC. Il mio pilota preferito è Marcus Gronholm, anche se non l’ho mai incontrato, egli è un driver così carismatico credo! “

Which is the best driver to immortalize in action??
Chi è il miglior pilota da immortalare nell’azione??

“Novikov and Latvala are quite spectacular; they are not always the fastest, but you can be sure that they will jump higher than everyone else!”

“Novikov e Latvala sono molto spettacolari, non sono sempre i più veloci, ma si può essere sicuri che salteranno più in alto di tutti gli altri!”

What do you think about Wrc and Erc they are better today or not??
Cosa pensi del Wrc e ERC sono meglio oggi o no??

“WRC remains the best championship I think, even if there is room for lots of improvements of course! ERC will be interesting in the next couple of years with the new R5 cars that are arriving. If we can expect 20 R5 cars per rally and good battles, it would be perfect!”

“Il WRC rimane il miglior campionato penso , anche se vi è comunque spazio per un sacco di miglioramenti naturalmente! L’ERC sarà interessante nel prossimo paio di anni con le nuove auto R5 che arrivano. Se ci fossero 20 R5 a rally e buone battaglie, sarebbe perfetto! “

What do you think about Italian rallies and Italian fans??
Cosa pensi dei rally italiani e dei suoi tifosi??

“This year we planned to travel to San Marino Rally, but unfortunately it was not part of ERC anymore. So considering the lower entries and the quite big budget we have for travelling, we decided to cancel. It was such a shame because it looks like a very beautiful rally. I hope that I can visit Italian rallies very soon and meet Italian fans!”

“Quest’anno avevamo programmato di recarci al San Marino Rally, ma purtroppo non èstato più parte dell’ERC. Quindi, considerando gli iscritti di livello più basso e l’abbastanza oneroso viaggio abbiamo deciso per cancellare il viaggio. E’ stato un peccato perché sembra che sia un bellissimo rally. Spero che potò visitare rally italiani molto presto e incontrare i tifosi italiani!”
